Cake time - a trip down memory lane

We like doing birthdays close together in our house. Kris and Emme are two days apart in February and Lachy and I four days apart in July. Will is by himself in June but shares his birthday with two of his cousins so there's a good chance for double the cake for him most years too.

Having said that, after last week I am soooo over cake. Birthdays in our house usually mean a cake for home, cupcakes for school and sometimes a second cake for extended family celebrations! So given the cake mad state we've been in I thought I'd take a little trip down birthday cake lane...

Warning: This could be painful - I just realised we're up to our 16th Birthday for the kids!

No cake here but couldn't resist the opportunity to share a newborn pic of Lachy, Will and Emme. Lachy slept in the bath our first night out of hospital as we didn't have a bassinet yet.

Here they are at one.

And at terrible two..

Ems bails out at three...

Boys at four....

Fabulous at five.....

And now to Lach at 6, 7 and 8

As for the rest of this year, Will has requested a cake with licorice for his birthday! Suits me - I love licorice. And Lachy has yet to decide but I'm guessing it will be something to do with Transformers, Minecraft or Tornados? Wish me luck!

Avoidance and Distraction – it’s CPA time again!

I know I have many talents, most of you know I have many talents, there are some talents that I have yet to share with you all, but believe me when I tell you…I’m just plain talented.

I had forgotten though just how good I am at avoiding study. This week marks the start of the next CPA unit for me. A unit I deferred last semester with the ducks nuts of avoidance strategies, a broken C7 disc!

Having spent my life savings on my new neck I figured another injury was probably not wise to use as a delaying tactic. It was time to put my thinking cap on and come up with some fool proof (and cheap) distractions to see me through to the end of April.

Facebook to the rescue – A quick scroll through the news feed and I decided to finally download Pinterest. I’m still learning how to use it of course but I’m sure it will provide me with hours of distraction and I’ll wonder how I ever lived without it. Here are my first ‘pins’.

But I’ve been thinking about Pinterest for a long time (maybe even avoiding it) and I wasn’t satisfied with that alone. A few months ago I signed up for Twitter and then the app stopped working and it got all too hard so I deleted it. But now that I’m busy, now that I have 15 hours of study to fit in each week, I can definitely find the time to learn Twitter! I’ve already had to unfollow Shane Warne, three hours of his tweets and he is officially off my list! Dan however, remains...

Still I wanted more, and like a sign from the good Lord above, right as I was pinning on Pinterest and checking Tweets I got a private message from a friend telling me I would love Word Ring. I’ll admit to being reluctant to install this one. It’s not a free app and I really wanted these distractions to be cheap and nasty. I decided it was worth the $0.99 investment and got started straight away. Cheers for the hot tip MacGyver!
I still had an inkling I’d have too much free time to study so I also installed ABC iview and plan to spend Emme’s sleep times catching up on missed episodes of Charlie and Lola and Peppa Pig and let’s face it, whatever else I can find to pass the time.

Righto – time for a screen shot of my 4 new lovely apps for the BFF before I file them away into their folders. I still have a few decisions to make before my avoidance and distraction mission is fully in force. Do I run my phone on silent mode for the next 12 weeks so I don’t get constantly interrupted? Which usually results in me running to the phone every 5 minutes to check it ‘just in case’. Or keep the sound on and take the much needed distractions as they come? Knowing me, I’ll stress over this decision until about Week 11 and then in the midst of a panic attack I’ll hide my phone in my tea towel drawer, lock myself in my wardrobe and cram cram cram!

Did I mention I was talented?

The holiday is over – including a cameo from Kelly Slater

Well it finally came around – the last day of school holidays. I’d been dreading it so much. The kids were probably well and truly ready to go back but back to school for me is a big dose of reality that I just don’t look forward to each February.

With school comes lunches, morning chaos, afternoon chaos and homework duties and all things soul destroying kick back in again. Including appointment after never ending bloody appointment! Week 1 I can’t breathe until Friday, Week 2 I can breathe on Monday but only because I had a cancellation, Week 3 is looking good with two days I can breathe, but it’s still early days. I’m sure I won’t be afforded the luxury of two consecutive days with nothing on. Anyway, given the hectic schedule that the return to school signifies I was keen to make the last day of holidays one to remember.

We decided a trip up to the Donnybrook Apple Park would be fun! Kris surprised us on the morning with a detour to Gnomesville. (He really is getting good at these surprises.) The drive up to Ferguson Valley was beautiful. I feel so at home in the trees, especially the tall timbers of the South West. I know of people that see red dirt, or oceans at sunset and feel home but for me it is definitely trees. As soon as we got out of the car I was excited!

The excitement didn’t last long… while the kids were excited to see all the gnomes spread out through the bush I will admit to being a bit of a gnome hater (actually a LOT of a gnome hater.) Seeing the joy in their faces however was starting to win this gnomeaphobe over. I flicked a kick arse bull ant off of my toe, killed a marchie and tried to suck it up until Will pointed out that it was a lot like a cemetery and I started getting all freaked out again! The creepy panda in the tree assured me it was definitely time to get out of there. As we headed back to the car the kids expressed their absolute love of gnomes and asked if we could get some for home. I heard Kris giggling and telling them how much I love gnomes and that it would be a great idea! Bastard! These are some that caught my eye…(made super small for my viewing pleasure.)

My favourite - turtles - I'm not a turtlephobe

Finally we were safely back in the car and heading to Donnybrook. There is some stunning property through the bush, covered in my all-time favourite willow trees and of course the tall timbers. I fell in love with this dam and park bench. One day….sigh…

We arrived in Donnybrook and the park was empty so the kids had the run of the place for a while. Soon enough, it started to fill up though.

The temperature started to soar, the breeze died away and then….in he strode. I picked my jaw up off of the ground and decided to watch his technique. Maybe he could teach me a thing or two about push ups? ‘He’ being the Kelly Slater look alike who forgot to wear half of his clothes to the park. What a tease – I bet he knew the park would be full of Mums like me interested to learn the correct technique for chin ups and push ups. Unfortunately the show was soon over and the Brazilian backpacker left on foot. I managed to 'accidentally' capture these while snapping the kids having fun!
Phew...show over and it was time for an ice cream to cool off before heading home. We spent the rest of the afternoon watching movies and had a quick dip in the pool. Oh, and I was surprised to see this when I went outside…
Perhaps I wasn't the only one to learn a thing or two from Kelly?
